Missouri Market Development Program: Recycling Markets
Markets
Collecting recyclables is fairly simple. There are many options
on what materials are collected, how they are collected, how
often to collect, etc. The real dilemma comes after you have
collected the recyclables. How do you process these materials,
if you process them at all, and to whom do you sell them? How
much revenue can you expect to make and what will be the expenses?
The answers to all of these questions begin with finding the right "market" for your recyclables. That may be as simple as giving all your materials to a local processor (you will still save on trash collection costs and disposal fees), or processing the materials yourself and selling those materials to a recovered materials buyer or broker.
The Missouri Directory of Markets for Recovered Materials is intended to provide some of the contacts needed to make those decisions. It lists entities that are end-users, brokers or material recovery facilities. The directory was originally created by the Midwest Assistance Program and is now maintained for the Missouri Market Development Program by our partner, University of Missouri Outreach and Extension. The purpose of the directory is to help community leaders and private recyclers plan and implement responsible solid waste management.
Market Trends
Trends in recyclable market prices are tracked by the Associated Recyclers of the Midwest. This group was formed in 1999 to cooperatively market recovered materials of its member organizations.

Materials Exchanges
Materials exchanges work to to match businesses that produce
waste, industrial by-products, surplus materials and equipment
with businesses that can use them. The Missouri Market Development
Program distributes the Industrial Materials Exchange Service,
a quarterly catalog published by the Illinois EPA that contains
listings for all types of non-hazardous and hazardous materials
available for exchange from sources throughout the United States.
Contact the Program if you would like to be added to the distribution
list.
Industry Online Central also offers a free listing in its materials exchange, charging a service fee only for successful exchanges.
