Project Description:

MO-AG Custom Applicator Workshops

There are many reservoirs, particularly in north Missouri, listed on the state's 303(d) list of impaired waters due to excessive levels of pesticides. In Missouri, approximately 63% of the population receives its drinking water from surface water sources. The techniques used by custom applicators of pesticides have a direct impact on how much chemical stays on the field and how much runs off into surface waters.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Missouri Ag Industries Council, Inc. (MO-AG), in cooperation with Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) will be conducting three, two-day workshops in the winter months. The workshops are located near watersheds impaired due to crop protectant contamination. Proper application techniques and procedures by custom applicators have a direct impact in preventing atrazine and other agrochemical nonpoint source pollutants (runoff).

This statewide program will target custom applicators who will be applying atrazine and other crop protectants in and around the 303(d) listed watersheds. MO-AG believes it is extremely important for our custom applicators to be environmentally aware, efficient and professional. The more efficient an applicator is, the more crop protectants stay within the targeted area. This enhances yields while not allowing crop protectants to enter Missouri waters.

OBJECTIVE

1. Train 150 custom applicators, from 303(d) listed watersheds, the proper techniques of applying agrichemicals and related nonpoint source water quality issues.

PRODUCTS

Each participant will take a pre-test. Upon completion of the workshop, a post-test will be administered. Scores will be compared to determine the overall success of the program. In addition, each participant will complete a critique survey to ensure improvements are made to the program. Scholarships to attend the training will be given to those participants who spray in the watershed areas listed on the 303(d) list.
