From the Grass Roots - Building community Development into Watershed Management
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Grant funds will be used to employ university staff to promote community-based leadership skills, collaboration for capacity building and the development of Water Quality Management Plans for at least 20 Missouri watershed communities. Priorities will be given to waterbodies listed on the Section 303(d) Impaired Waters List. Community development expertise will be transferred through local, regional and state workshops, and technical assistance and team-building assistance will be offered during the development of water quality management plans. In addition, two statewide conferences will be held.
OBJECTIVES
The goal is to develop community involvement in watershed protection. The objectives are to:
Implement provisions of Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act;
Promote use of community-based development concepts and established alliances to build relationships among all parties involved in the protection of watershed in Missouri;
Provide ongoing support to existing 303(d) watershed projects:
1. Invite community interest and involvement through two statewide workshops;
2. Inform and educate 500 citizens on TMDLs, 303(d) and WRAS criteria for watershed planning; and
3. Develop educational and community-building materials that will be appropriate for use statewide.
PRODUCTS
1. Increased community involvement in 20 community watersheds;
2. Potentially 20 water quality management plans; and
3. Two statewide workshops; and
4. Educational materials.
