Project Description:

Galloway Creek Greenway - Wayside Exhibit

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Ozark Greenways is working with other agencies in the Springfield area to increase public awareness on a variety of environmental issues. This project will construct a trail side information kiosk in the Galloway Creek Greenway with a variety of educational information relating to nonpoint source pollution. The information will be rotated throughout the year and is reusable. Six to eight component groups of information will be created. The kiosk design will replicate an old water well, which will attract attention and relate to our fragile connection to the community water supply.

OBJECTIVES

1. Increase the public's awareness about nonpoint source pollution through the use of a creative trailside interpretive station.
2. Create an interesting and educational revolving display focused on area water quality and the effects of nonpoint source pollution.
3. Educate local homeowners about the impact of their actions within the regional watershed'
4. Encourage public involvement in watershed protection by illustrating the types of nonpoint source pollution and what they can do to improve current situations.
5. Measure the results of this project by conducting a clip-board survey at the kiosk location at two six month intervals after the kiosk information is installed. The survey would measure attitudes and knowledge base of homeowners and trail users about nonpoint source pollution. We hope to involve college students from the Southwest Missouri State Recreation Department and Natural Science Department to conduct the survey.

PRODUCTS

This project will produce an attractive and permanent trailside kiosk which will be used for several years to educate the public about the natural environment and human interaction with their surroundings. Six to eight display units will be created that focus on nonpoint source pollution. They will be displayed on a rotating schedule to keep the interest of trail users.
