Environmental Rendezvous 2000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This minigrant will support the education of students, stream data collection (water sampling) and a streambank stabilization project on Dardenne Creek in St. Charles County. It will give students an interactive experience, make them aware of the environment and allow them to become stakeholders in the health of Dardenne Creek. This event will also allow past and present stream data to be shared with the general public to make them aware of associated nonpoint source issues.

OBJECTIVES

1. Students involved in the project are all members of the Missouri Stream Team program. Data will be collected on Dardenne and compared to past date to educate the public on stream environmental and nonpoint source issues.
2. Increase environmental literacy of public by making them aware of water quality issues associated with Dardenne Creek. A streambank protection practice will also be demonstrated to educate the public on best management practices that could be used to reduce nonpoint source pollution problems.

PRODUCTS

1. Collection stream data on the Dardenne Creek. Twenty-seven sites will be monitored.
2. A clean water celebration day will be include where professional speakers will share topics that cover bio-diversity and the role an adequate riparian corridor plays in the control of nonpoint source pollution.
3. A survey to measure the increase environmental literacy of the public will be conducted.
4. A tree planting demonstration practice will be install for streambank stabilization on the creek to educate the public on ways to reduce nonpoint pollution in streams.
