Project Description:

Missouri Statewide Lake Assessment

Missouri lakes are diverse in size, use (water supply, hydro-power, recreation, etc.) and geographical location. Relatively few of these lakes have point sources within the watershed. This means that nonpoint source pollution is the biggest threat to lake water quality in the state. Documentation of water quality problems is not only the first step in remedial actions but also very important in educating the general public about nonpoint source pollution. Data from a large number of lakes allows for the comparison of lakes to determine which are impaired, monitoring of water quality over time to determine what changes are occurring, and description of how nonpoint source pollution impacts Missouri lakes.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Lake water samples and water quality data are collected from approximately 60 lakes throughout the state. The lakes represent the full range of lake sizes, uses, and geographical location in Missouri. A graduate student and a student helper travel across the state collecting the water samples and data. The sample season occurs from mid-May through mid-August during which each lake is sampled four times. All analyses are conducted at the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, University of Missouri. Parameters measured include water temperature, dissolved oxygen, Secchi disk transparency, nitrogen, phosphorus, algal chlorophyll and total suspended solids.

OBJECTIVES

1. Determine the current water quality of Missouri lakes;
2. Quantify the factors regulating water quality;
3. Monitor for changes in water quality within individual water bodies; and
4. Monitor for regional trends in water quality.

PRODUCTS

The statewide assessment program produces water quality data on approximately 60 lakes in the state. These data are provided to the MoDNR to assist with meeting Clean Water Act requirements. The data are also made available to agency personnel, lake managers and other interested citizens. Scientific journal articles are written with these data examining the water quality in Missouri lakes. The data are also used by University personnel to educate the public about water quality issues and lake ecology.
