Soils and Urban Conservation Tour
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Show-Me Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society will develop and conduct an educational tour of soil and urban conservation practices protecting water quality in the St. Louis area. The tour will be held in conjunction with a national meeting of the Soil and Water Conservation Society in July 2000. Target audience is natural resource professionals. The tour will consist of lectures and site visits to study urbanizing areas and the impact of urbanization on water quality. Participants will see water quality improvements to stormwater runoff flow along Midland Creek in Maryland Heights through the restoration of riparian zones and stream stabilization. The group will also tour Caulks Creek in the city of Wildwood to learn about the impacts of rapid and heavy urbanization on a stream system.
OBJECTIVES
Tour attendees will learn about:
1. water quality improvements to stormwater runoff flow through the restoration of riparian zones and stream stabilization,
2. morphological attributes of a "healthy" stream system and how it is important for water quality and quantity,
3. the impacts of rapid and heavy urbanization on a stream system and water quality and quantity impacts along with the importance of proper landuse planning, and
4. how development of civilizations had an impact on water quality as far back as 900 A.D.
