Project Description:

Watershed Conference - "Comprehensive Community Planning:
A Watershed Approach"

The Dardenne Creek Watershed is located in central St. Charles County and eastern Warren County, Missouri. The watershed covers about 160 square miles. Urban activities occupy 34 percent of the watershed including residential, transportation, commercial and industrial uses. Other land includes grassland (11%), cropland (17%), forest (13%) wetland (5%) water bodies (1%) and other agricultural lands (18%).

Dardenne Creek watershed has been experiencing urban and agricultural runoff, flash flooding, sedimentation, wetland degradation and chemical contamination of the water bodies due to rapid development in the area.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The watershed conference will address issues regarding nonpoint sources of pollution in a watershed context for engineers, developers, educators, decision-makers, and citizens.

Topics covered in the conference include how streams work, use of wetlands for filtering non-point source pollutants, importance of proper land use planning, stormwater regulations, using ordinances to reduce non-point source pollutants, how development can occur with an awareness of the environment, and water quality improvements through restoration of riparian zones and stream stabilization. The Dardenne Creek tour at the end of the conference will visually highlight and reinforce the topics introduced in the conference.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the conference is to increase awareness of nonpoint source pollution problems that are being created by rapid urbanization in the watershed, and to encourage an environmentally friendly approach for development within the watershed.

PRODUCTS

Conference brochure, conference manual, news releases, conference, conference evaluation sheets for day 1 and day 2, attendance record, feedback from scoping session that was held to identify resource problems and propose potential solutions.
