Project Description:

Missouri River Celebration and Lewis and Clark Rendezvous

The Missouri River is on the 1998 303(d) list and is a major river that flows through several states in the country. Many streams in Missouri eventually empty into the Missouri River carrying nonpoint source pollutants with them. The Missouri River has been channelized resulting in a large loss of habitat for a number of plant and animal species.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Missouri River Celebration and Lewis and Clark Rendezvous is a one day water quality education event. This event will address a number of issues related to water quality and nonpoint sources of pollution. Participants of the event will be educated on the impact of pollution on tourism, recreation, and water for domestic and other uses. Re-enactors of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery and musicians singing about life on the river will demonstrate the strong heritage associated with the river.

OBJECTIVES

1. Raise the public's awareness of nonpoint source pollution of the Missouri River and other water quality issues.
2. Introduce people to economic development opportunities associated with recreation and tourism on the river, and to show how water quality plays a critical part in these activities.
3. Get participants interested in local water quality efforts such as stream teams, clean-up groups etc.
4. Develop a process for water quality celebrations.

PRODUCTS

A summary of the celebration and a listing of resources for local watershed planning activities; a survey of water quality knowledge; media coverage; feedback from volunteers and the city sponsors, and the final report.
