Project Description:

Conservation Development Workshop

With the close proximity to St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson Counties are experiencing high rates of "urban sprawl" which is greatly impacting the local watersheds. Land development is contributing to major nonpoint source pollution and flooding problems.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

St. Charles County Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor a workshop in St. Peters, Missouri, that is directed at incorporating ecological designs into traditional land development projects. The focus is on retaining open space, protecting natural and sensitive areas, reducing and treating stormwater to reduce nonpoint source pollution. The goal of the workshop is to educate the audience and bring these disciplines together to address the advantages and pitfalls of conservation development.

OBJECTIVES

1. To educate local decision-makers, developers, municipal planning and engineering staff, and private engineers on the advantages and pitfalls of conservation development principles.
2. To decrease the amount of nonpoint source pollution derived from land development activities.
3. To decrease the frequency and magnitude of local stormwater runoff.
4. Protect natural and sensitive areas.
5. Retain open spaces.
6. Develop working relationships between the Home Builder's Association and developers.
