Project Description:

Missouri River Relief: Hands On Water Quality Education

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project focused on an area of the Missouri River from Rocheport, Missouri to Hartsburg, Missouri. The main emphasis was on clean-up of this stretch of the river. A barge equipped with crane and derrick was supplied. This barge was used as a base of operations, sorting area, and transport for collected items. Local volunteers were trained in safety and water quality issues and then accompanied boats and collected and sorted materials. Also, at the end of the event, a celebration was held. This celebration included educational displays and speakers. News media in the area covered the entire event.

OBJECTIVES

1. Educate public about the importance of watershed planning.
2. Stress the water quality aspects of the clean-up.
3. Recruit and train 300 volunteers.
4. Involve local government
5. Pick up trash on this stretch of the river.
6. Identify and report any hazardous materials.
7. Hold a community recognition celebration.
8. Recycle any materials that can be recycled.

PRODUCTS

1. Improve this river stretch.
2. Measure impact of the event.
3. Education of the public by hands on, presentation, training and media coverage.
