Project Description:

Dance Concepts' Nonpoint Source Pollution Performance Project: Doing the Clean Water Wave

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Funding is being provided from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) FY00 319 Nonpoint Source Implementation Grant. The $5,000 in federal funds will be used to partially sponsor the development and performances of a project to educate middle and high school students about nonpoint source pollution and the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act via the performing arts. Young dancers will present a professionally choreographed, costumed and creative presentation to their peers, conveying key concepts about nonpoint source pollution using information from EPA as a guide. The 319 program encourages innovative approaches to water quality protection. Although this project is unlike any previously funded, it is expected to reach an audience not generally exposed to typical 319 projects. Department staff will be closely involved in overseeing the project to ensure it meets the grant criteria.

OBJECTIVES

The objective is to increase awareness of nonpoint source pollution and the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act to the mid-Missouri community, especially its young people. An entertaining and educational program will be presented to more than 2000 young people, at 2 environmental "happenings", 2 evening performances, and a final performance at Lincoln University's Richardson Auditorium. Posters developed by our young audience will be reproduced for display at local businesses. A professionally developed video taping of the performance and additional programs will be made available for future presentations.

PRODUCTS

The following will be achieved:
-2 school based performances
-2 earth day or environmental performances
-2 evening performances in association with the Missouri Department of Conservation
-distribution of educational program to all viewers
-final performance/celebration at Richardson Auditorium
-sponsoring of middle school poster contest
