BOY SCOUTS STORMWATER EDUCATION AND DEMONSTRATION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project will focus on developing a stormwater nutrient filtering and retention system that will be used to educate the citizens of Springfield about stormwater management. A detention pond and wetland system will be used to filter out sediment and nutrients before it enter Pearson Creek, protecting the water quality. An education facility and nature trails will be built on site to inform the public about the value of wetlands and multiple use potential of stormwater facilities.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this project is to retrofit an existing detention basin into a stormwater nutrient filtering and retention system. Construction of wetlands, a forbay and wet detention pond will be used to reduce the flow of nonpoint source pollution into Pearson Creek. The stormwater nutrient filtering and retention system will be used to educate and demonstrate a practical solution in addressing urban nonpoint source problems to the citizens of Springfield. The education/demonstration will include the building of nature trails, planting of native vegetation, development of wetlands and reconstruction of a stormwater detention pond. The Springfield community will be educated about stormwater management principles and the multiple use benefits of urban stormwater facilities
PRODUCTS
A demonstration sites will be developed to show the effectiveness of a stormwater nutrient filtering and retention system. The products include planting of native vegetation, wildflowers planting, the building of nature trails, development of wetlands and reconstruction of a stormwater detention pond. Signs will be developed and placed along the trails to education the publics. Water quality monitoring will be done to evaluate the effectiveness of the system. A Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) will also be developed.
