Peruque Creek Watershed Alliance Fact Sheet

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Due to changing land uses within its watershed, Peruque Creek has become encumbered with many challenges. Various citizens that are either concerned with natural resources or directly and negatively impacted by the Creek's growing problems formed the Peruque Creek Watershed Alliance that would seek to improve the Stream's conditions. The group included people of various interests including, homeowners, agricultural producers, a local developer, conservation agencies, and representatives from the local governments. The Alliance has drafted a watershed plan that outlines their concerns and suggests strategies for improving the health of Peruque Creek. The Plan outlines five main concerns: wastewater (sewage plant and septic) corridor protection, general water quality, sediment and erosion control, and flooding. In order to gain acceptance of the Plan, a series of fact sheets will be developed that will function as a tool for educating citizens, government agencies, and elected officials about the Perque Creek water quality concerns. Fact sheets will be created that will explain general watershed planning techniques and address non-point source pollution issues.

OBJECTIVES

A series of educational fact sheets will be developed to inform citizens about non-point source pollution and water quality issues in the Peruque Creek watershed. Six fact sheets will be created for each of the water quality issues identified as a concern in the draft Peruque Creek Watershed Plan. Issues that will be discussed in the fact sheets includes sediment and erosion, wastewater, natural stream corridors, flooding and general water quality concerns. The fact sheets will be made available to planning agencies and Commissions, city and county councils, legislators, government and state agencies and the general public.

PRODUCTS
Print a series of six fact sheets, 1,000 copies of each. Each fact sheet will be in color with text, local pictures, diagrams, and figures that will clearly and concisely provide information to the reader. Distribution of the fact sheets will be through planning meeting, public events, web sites and varies agency offices. A written questionnaire and personnel contact will be used to obtain feedback from the public and evaluate the usefulness of the fact sheets information.
