Webster County Water Quality Awareness Project

Recent studies indicate that Webster County's growth rate over the past decade is approaching 30%. Rapid population growth rates are often associated with increases in nonpoint water pollution.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project is to train Webster County residents (MHS students) in water quality assessment techniques. Once trained, these students will apply their skills to local water resources to develop water quality maps. These maps will contain water quality information gathered in the fall of 2003 and the spring of 2004 from (1) a Gasconade River site; (2) a Marshfield City Park stream and (3) West Fork of the Niangua River sites above, within and below the Marshfield Wastewater Treatment Plant 303(d) impact zone.

METHODS EMPLOYED

? 40 high school student will demonstrate competency in water quality monitoring by presenting displays appropriate for a Level 1 volunteer - Kim Fields certified.
? Fall and Spring water quality maps that include 303(d) zones will be constructed.
? Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 water quality presentations made to Marshfield City Council.
? Information collected will be used to develop a Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) curriculum module.
? Students will develop a solutions chart detailing possible water quality impact causes along with individual and community solutions for public presentation.

These experiences will be compiled into a series of presentations about water quality and nonpoint pollution issues for presentation to the Marshfield City Council and the Marshfield community.
