Project Description:

Mudd Creek Water Quality Education Program

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This minigrant will be coordinated with the AgNPS SALT project in the watershed and will cover HUC 10280101210001 and 10003. Mudd Creek is a tributary to Shoal Creek in the Grand River Basin where most water quality problems are associated with nonpoint source pollutants such as soil erosion and manure runoff. An educational and monitoring effort aimed toward landowners and high school students from 2 area schools will produce a well survey and stream monitoring information for the watershed.

OBJECTIVES
1. To educate 177 area landowners and 237 area high school students on how to prevent nonpoint source pollution and the need for regular well testing with the aid of an Enviroscape and the Groundwater Flow models.
2. To produce a monitoring survey of approximately 60% of the wells (~50) currently in use in the Mudd Creek Watershed for nonpoint source pollution based upon criteria for the most important wells to target.
3. To have 237 students in grades 6-12 participate in well and stream testing workshops that emphasize the causes and prevention of nonpoint source pollution.
4. To train 40 Braymer High School students on proper well testing techniques and participate in monthly stream testing workshops.

METHODS EMPLOYED
This grant will purchase an Enviroscape and a Groundwater Flow model to demonstrate sources of potential water pollution within the watershed. Using these models educational classes will be provided for area landowners and students from two area high schools. A well monitoring survey will be conducted in partnership with the local and state department of heath with samples tested for fecal coliform and nitrates. High school students will be trained on well and stream testing techniques and will conduct monthly stream testing using stream monitoring supplies provided by the grant. Both the well monitoring and stream testing will be conducted under an existing QAPP.

PRODUCTS
4 demonstrations to high school students using Enviroscape and Groundwater Flow models
8 field days for high school students teaching hands on stream monitoring and well testing
3 landowner educational meetings using Enviroscape and Groundwater Flow models
1 well monitoring survey (fecal coliform and nitrates) for 60 percent of wells in the watershed
