Smithville Lake Watershed
Watershed Management Plan Update
The Smithville Lake Watershed is experiencing rapid urbanization due to it's proximity to the Kansas City area. The lake has historically been influenced by agricultural activities, with atrizine and sediment pollution. As the watershed is developed, new issues and pollutants are emerging. Issues with stormwater runoff and land development need to be addressed and added to the watershed management plan. Currently the lake is listed on the proposed 2002 303(d) list for Mercury impairment.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
During the 18 months of this minigrant, the project sponsor will conduct 2 public meetings to introduce the project to the community. The coalition will work to gather all the past data produced on Smithville Lake, into a single clearinghouse. Aerial photos will be taken to document current watershed conditions. Critical and problem areas will be documented to target future Best Management Practices. All of this data will be used to update the current Watershed Management Plan. This plan is 4 years old, and does not address EPA 9 elements.
OBJECTIVES
1. To develop a system for gathering all data completed by water quality monitoring agencies;
2. Develop and education and outreach program that targets development of the land, stormwater run-off, and other urbanization issues;
3. Hold one public meeting to gather input on concerns in the watershed, with at least 50 people in attendance.
4. Hold one public meeting to introduce the final plan to the community, with an audience of at least 50 people.
5. Take and develop aerial photos of the degraded watershed areas to locate problem areas in the watershed, and to use as a before and after demonstration.
6. Increase the size of the Smithville Lake Watershed Coalition by 5 active members.
7. Print and distribute the final watershed management plan.
