Project Description:

Marshfield High School Erosion Control Project

Recent studies indicate that the growth rate in the surrounding area over the past decade is approaching 30%. Rapid population growth rates are often associated with increases in nonpoint water pollution from development.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Marshfield High School students have developed a plan to install erosion control practices on school grounds where erosion is occurring from recent development. The project will support the purchase of materials for erosion control practices installed on school grounds. The students will learn through active involvement and monitoring how erosion control can improve water quality runoff by comparing pre-construction erosion rates to post-construction rates for each structure. Student presentations will be evaluated by independent judging panels consisting of at least three classroom teachers, two of whom must have completed the three-year Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) training program. MAP-trained teachers will evaluate student portfolios of project objectives according to MAP standards. Information collected from this project will be used to construct a MAP instructional module.

OBJECTIVES

? The objectives of this project are for High School students to assist in construction of an experimental erosion control design and monitor the effectiveness of their design for one academic year.

METHODS EMPLOYED

? Pre-construction erosion rates compared to post-construction rates for each structure.
? Durability information on experimental system collected for analysis by other organizations considering erosion control, including rainfall patterns and rates, measurements of system to detect movement and photographic record of project.
? Student presentations evaluated by independent judging panels consisting of at least three classroom teachers, two of whom must have completed the three-year MAP training program.
? Student portfolios of project objectives evaluated according to MAP standards by MAP-trained teachers.

PRODUCTS

? Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) instructional module
? Guidebook documenting process written for other school districts
? Final report submitted to DNR
