Prescription Farming Demonstration
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Expansion of the pilot project was funded with 205(j) funds. Prescription farming varies the application rate of fertilizer or pesticeds across the field, rather than using a single rate over the entire field. The project will demonstrate how site specific data can be collected, stored, and interpreted using a GIS from a regional to sub-field level. New soil samples over 10,000 acres will be collected using GPS receivers. Althogh the tecnology exists, it has not been packaged in a demonstration format. The sponsors hope that the project can become the showcase demonstrating the technology as well as cooperation between government agencies and agribusiness. The Stennis Space Center will be providing technical support.
OBJECTIVES
The project will strive to show how GPS technology coupled with a GIS can process field data from a regional to sub-level field.
PRODUCTS
The project will produce positives resluts in the form of soil samples form 10,000 acres using the GPS technology and a GIS.
