Publications for On-site Sewage Systems Project

Homeowners have a sizable investment in their individual sewage treatment systems and need to be informed on methods and practices they can employ to protect their investment, their health, their environment and contribute to a longer life for their system. The design and installation of an on-site sewage system may be satisfactory. However, unintentional abuse of the system by the homeowner can cause the system to fail prematurely. The failure can present multiple unacceptable threats, among them, health risks, pollution of surface waters, pollution of groundwater, complaints from neighbors and economic difficulty in selling a property. The project will take place from July 20, 1996 to February 28, 1997.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The funds will be used to support the development, publication and distribution of file folders printed with operation and maintenance do?s and don?t?s, stickers for the circuit boxes showing layout and pump dates, and nine specialized brochures detailing different types of on-site sewage treatment systems. Copies of the publications will be available to installers, lending institutions and to the public. Distribution points will include district and local health departments, the Department of Natural Resources, county university extension offices, county soil and water district offices and lending institutions.

OBJECTIVES

1) To give Missouri homeowners a clearer understanding on the proper design of on-site sewage treatment systems and how proper maintenance can increase the useful life of their system.
2) To provide installers, lenders and the general public with useful and up-to-date design and maintenance guidelines for on-site sewage treatment systems by making the publications available at local distribution points throughout Missouri.

PRODUCTS

Ten thousand copies of the following will be printed: file folders, circuit box stickers, septic tank brochures, aeration tank brochures, conventional gravel trench brochures, graveless systems brochures, lagoon brochures, and low pressure pipe brochures.
