Cameron Watershed FARM*A*SYST Program
This program will be used to assess and identify potential surface and
groundwater contamination risks around the farmsteads and will provide
suggestions of things that can be done to modify certain practices to help
improve water quality.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project will utilize the Farm*A*Syst Program to focus on the Grindstone Creek Watershed, which is the watershed of the Cameron City Lakes, the source of drinking water for the City of Cameron. The watershed is approximately 16, 647 acres, and the total population served is approximately 8500. Land use in the watershed is primarily agricultural. There are about 90 farms in the project area. The primary problems of the water resources are due to runoff of agricultural chemicals used in crop production. The Farm*A*Syst program will be used to assess and identify potential surface and groundwater contamination risks around the farmsteads and will provide suggestions of things that can be done to modify certain practices to help improve water quality. The information gathered from the program will remain confidential to the landowner, however an assessment of the watershed as a whole with respect to water quality will be collected.
PRODUCT AND OBJECTIVES
1. Reduce agricultural nonpoint source pollution through the use of Farm*A*Syst to identify sources of nonpoint pollution in the watershed above the Cameron City Reservoirs.
2. Use Farm*A*Syst information to increase public and producer awareness pertaining to NPS pollution problems through the use of public meetings, newsletters, local media, demonstrations, and field days. This information will also be used to help address similar water quality problems in other locations.
