"I Don't Want to Live in a Trash Can"
A Drain Stenciling Project and Poster Contest
Metro St. Louis Sewer District
The Metro Sewer District has learned that many residents living in the target area believe that disposing of motor oil or other contaminants in a sewer is an appropriate behavior. Solids and liquids, rather than rain water, contribute to street pooling, pollution in area streams and in the influent flowing into area wastewater treatment plants. The poster contest is a tactic used to alert the community to the stenciling program. Experience has shown MSD that children play a significant role in influencing their parents. The Stencile will read "NO DUMPING with an outline of a trash can. This message, along with education and information, is designed to alert potential sewer dumpers not to pour hazardous materials into sewers.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project will begin with a survey of school, and city residents, followed by classroom presentations and a poster contest. The winning poster will be placed in all participating schools. Door hangers will be designed and distributed to inform residents of storm drain stencling activities. A follow-up survey will be conducted to evaluate educational benefits of the program.
