Andrew County SWCD Youth Conservation Workshop Field Day II
The minigrant will fund a field day event at the St. Joseph Civic Arena to teach fourth grade children about conservation and nonpoint source pollution, increase awareness in students, teachers, and parents on how to reduce pollution, and encourage teachers to incorporate environmental educational materials into their teaching curriculum. The award will also provide financial assistance for travel to 45 schools that provide transportation to the event. The project will take place from February 1, 1998 - May 31, 1998.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The funds for this project will be used for a Youth Conservation Workshop Field Day II project to teach fourth grade children about conservation and nonpoint source pollution. The SWCDs have asked him to tailor his presentation to local issues by addressing wetlands; erosion prevention; household hazardous waste; stormwater runoff; recycling, reducing and reusing; water quality in general; adopting streams; and water quality awareness.
Colorful, resourceful and full of energy are some of the terms that describe the Natural Science Song and Dance Man - Billy B. Using simple, catchy lyrics and dynamic movement, Billy B. brings the environment to life for children of all ages. His main message will be to increase awareness about water quality. Billy B's original songs include rock 'n roll, reggae, folk, salsa, r and b and rap music. He involves the children thoroughly in his act, saying every kid likes to do two things: move and make noise. He'll have the kids spinning like maple leaves, slurping like rising sap, and knock-knock-knocking like woodpeckers.
OBJECTIVES
1. To provide education about nonpoint source pollution control and other environmental concerns to include soil and water conservation, wetlands, and water quality to over 2,000 youths.
2. Provide financial assistance to 45 schools (78 classes) for transportation expenses to and from performance site.
3. To provide useful information on soils to help improve and prepare students in the fourth grade for their Show-Me-Standards (MMAT's).
