MISSOURI ENVIROTHON
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Teams of five students are formed to solve real-life environmental problems, as would natural resource professionals who deal with these issues daily. They are tested at the local level on five topics - soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry and a current conservation issue. While the thrill of competition can motivate any team member to excel, it's teamwork that will win the Envirothon. Students learn to work together to solve problems. They learn to consider each other's opinions and rely on the strengths of their team members.
During the competition, the teams visit test stations on each topic. Through hands-on experiments, analysis, and use of critical thinking skills, the teams answer a set of questions at each station. The final station poses a problem based on a current conservation issue. They present their solution orally to a panel of judges. Local winners advance to the state competition, and the winning state team will compete in a national competition to be held in August. The project lasts from April 15, 1998 to August 31, 1998.
