Project Description:

Mo-Ag Clean Pestide Container Recycling Program

The Mo-Ag Clean Pesticide Container Recycling program was established in 1991 to provide Missouri's agrichemical dealers and growers with an alternative to landfilling clean pesticide containers. Proper cleaning and disposal of pesticide container will also contribute to water quality protection. The goals are 1) to provide an environmentally sound method of disposing used, clean containers; and 2) to educate dealers and growers on the proper methods of cleaning pesticide containers as required by law.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Mo-Ag Clean Pesticide Container Program begins later Winter and usually ends with the collection of containers in August and October, although the planning and organization is a year long process. Presentations are planned for Rockport, St. Joseph, Chillicothe, LaBelle, Monroe City, Cairo, Jefferson City, La Monte, Walker, Mexico and Hawk Point.

The program will target the collection of high density polyethylene (HDPE) containers two and one half gallons or less. The program will take up to 55 gallon ag-chem containers. Mini-bulk containers can be recycled by contacting the sub-contractor.

Mo-Ag publicizes the program statewide and distributes education materials to university extension personnel, NRCS offices, dealers statewide, ag-chem sales representatives and the media. Also, students that participate in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Missouri will be able to earn 1 to 2 credits toward their degree. Mo-Ag also supplies the volunteers protective gloves, aprons, ear plugs and boots. Cost of the program is dependant upon grants, contributions from chemical manufacturers and participation fees.

OBJECTIVES

1. To collect at least 60 tons of HDPE plastic while diverting once considered hazardous waste from rural landfills.
2. To provide educational materials regarding the proper cleaning and storage methods through the distribution of 4,000 application brochures, flyers, posters and other information to ag-chem dealerships, chemical sales representatives, MFA Farmland, NRCS, University of Missouri and the Mark Twain Water Quality Initiative.

PRODUCTS

Diverted solid waste and pollution prevention. Recycled plastic available for use in manufacturing industrial pallets that are used in ag-chem facilities or distribution companies which has been done before with these waste by-products.
