Black Locust is a native tree reaching a height of 30 to 50 feet (sometimes up to 80 feet). It produces very fragrant white flowers from May to June. In the summer and fall, the plant produces flat brown black pods. Young growth has thorns and small branches that fall easily during storms. It forms a dense thicket and is a good plant for difficult sites. Black Locust is generally considered a weed because it spreads prolifically by suckering.
