Prairie Dock
Silphium terebinthinaceum

Prairie dock is a native plant 3 to 10 feet in height. The plant blooms from July to September. Sunflower-like flowers (up to 3 inche wide) with yellow rays and yellow center disks bloom in loose clusters on the upper parts of the plant. The species name comes from the Greek word, meaning "like turpentine," in reference to the aromatic stem resins.
