Minutes of Meeting

Truman State Office Building, Room 500
Jefferson City, MO
Nov. 30, 1999

Attendees (per sign-in sheet)

Terry Sheffield, Jeff Jaquess, Valerie Johnson, Clarice Morgan, Saundra Farrow, Bernard Thompson, Tanya Black, David Johnson, Mark P. Ort, David Stock, Richanda Mosley, Jannette Booker, Walter Pearson, Gail Conley, Kevin Johnson, David Brothers, Crystal Johnson, Cynthia Fulks, Carlton Flowers, Steven Wyatt, G. Lawson Penny, Kenny Seeney, Julie Stone, Chris Buckland, Richard Gaffney.

Chair G. Lawson Penny opened the meeting at 10:10 a.m. The minutes of the October 1999 Multicultural Affairs Committee (MAC) meeting were read and approved, with the amendment to add Steve Wyatt to the list of attendees.

It was noted that all division representatives or alternates were in attendance with the exception of the Division of Administrative Support (DAS).

Old Business - Jeff Jaquess discussed his work with Debbie Boeckman regarding the Web pages.

New Business - Penny met with Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Director Steve Mahfood about diversity issues regarding career development of employees because there are many DNR managers approaching retirement. Penny would like a subcommittee formed to take inventory of employees, take into account the affirmative action plan to identify management prospects and devise training and bring the plan forth no later than April 1, 2000.

Penny announced Wilma Partee of the Human Resources Program has a survey she is distributing to evaluate the program she directs.

Kenny Seeney discussed the Third Annual Diversity Conference. Seeney met with Dr. Henson of Lincoln University and Director Mahfood regarding a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between our agencies. Director Mahfood is trying to schedule Governor Carnahan to give opening remarks. Seeney is working with the executive staff to get department managers to work as conference assistants, which will enable members of the Diversity Conference Subcommittee to work as troubleshooters. Keynote speakers are still being explored, and letters have been sent to 12 potential facilitators. There will be six sessions this year. Because the conference is being held during Women’s History Month, we would like to have a woman as one of the keynote speakers; and hopefully, we will have a poster at the conference honoring women.

Kevin Johnson reported on the progress of the 2000 MAC calendar.

Steve Wyatt reported on behalf of Leanne Chojnacki regarding the Multicultural Foods Festival to be held Dec. 9, 1999.

There was discussion about the Minority Scholarship program and minutes of those meetings can be found on the Director’s Office Web page.

Tanya Black reported on the MAC budget.

As a long-term goal, Penny would like to have awards for MAC participation and would like these to be given at the Thursday luncheon of the Diversity Conference.

Valerie Johnson was our speaker and talked about identifying barriers to career development. Johnson also stated her office is working on the affirmative action plan, the Employee Advisory Council (EAC) is still being worked on, there are plans to have the Policy and Procedures Manual overhauled, training is being scheduled for sexual harassment issues, and bids are being evaluated for diversity training.

The next regular MAC meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Inman E. Page Library at Lincoln University, 720 Lee Drive, Jefferson City, Missouri.

These minutes were recorded by Terry Sheffield.
