Minutes of Meeting
Lincoln University
Jefferson City, MO
Feb. 24, 1999
Attendees (per sign-in sheet)
Jeff Jaquess, Richonia Freeman, Patricia Pride, Robert Mesa, Kenny Seeney, G. Lawson Penny, Terry Sheffield, Bud Pratt, Bonnie Higdon, David Bahadori, Lorrie Koelling, Kevin Johnson, Steven Wyatt, David Johnson, Glenda Crymes, Richard Gaffney, Jan Douglas
The meeting was called to order at 11:25 a.m. Minutes of the January 1, 1999 meeting were read. Corrections included adding G. Lawson Penny as one of the attendees at the Multicultural Opportunities Festival and adding that the two articles covered in Inner Resources regarded the Diversity Conference and the MAC Calendar. Noting a quorum, the minutes were approved with corrections.
Kevin Johnson provided a report of the evaluations on the First Annual Diversity Conference and evaluation forms for this year's conference were discussed. Proposed is to get OA involved and have computer scanned response sheets with perhaps an overall evaluation form in the attendees' packets and a form for each facilitator. Also discussed was the possibility of having different forms for each day because some people cannot attend both days.
Regarding this year's Diversity Conference, Kenny Seeney reported that all facilitators except one have been confirmed, with 85 percent being from outside Jefferson City. This is a reversal from last year's conference. One of the facilitators asked for a computer to assist in his presentation, so knowledgeable assistance will be required. Resource people will assist facilitators, videotape the sessions, direct the flow of participants from session to session and initiate conversation. We will urge facilitators to use flipcharts as much as possible for easier summarization of each session. Three people are needed to work the registration table (Bonnie Higdon and Lorrie Koelling volunteered). We are also working on gifts for the facilitators and speakers, with Jeff Staake and Walter Pearson being contacted for assistance. We would like to create a positive response from our guests and hope to have adequate tokens of our appreciation. There was considerable discussion regarding sign-in and meal registration due to payment for meals being made based on the list of attendees that must accompany the payment requests. It was suggested that Steve Mahfood and each facilitator reiterate that the supervisor/subordinate relationship should not interfere with participation by all in the sessions. To complete planning for the conference, March 1, 10 and 17 have meetings scheduled, and everyone is encouraged to assist in the final preparations.
The Strategic Planning Conference is scheduled for May 26 and May 27, 1999. Tentative plans are to meet from 6 - 9 p.m. Wednesday evening, have a breakfast session Thursday morning, and meet again from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Thursday. It was emphasized that this is a MAC body meeting and not just a subcommittee meeting, so all members are urged to attend. Dormitory style rooms are available at Central Missouri State University for participants.
Terry Sheffield is still working on coordination between state agencies and the University of Missouri-Rolla International Students for a food festival to accompany our April 29, 1999, MAC meeting. This date was changed from April 22 because of a conflict with the Earth Day celebration.
Kevin Johnson reported on behalf of the MAC Calendar Subcommittee and stated that distribution seems to be the only problem we're having. We also need to arrive at a method to make these available to interested members of the general public.
Bud Pratt reported Tom Kruse is out of the hospital, and efforts are being made to enable him to work at home during his recuperation.
Kevin Johnson has entered nominations for the Governor's Torch of Excellence awards on behalf of the Subcommittees for the Calendar and Diversity Conference.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
After the meeting several members were to tour the areas of the Lincoln University campus that will be used for the Diversity Conference.
These minutes were recorded by Terry Sheffield, secretary.
