JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 30, 2009 -- Gov. Jay Nixon announced the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded the Gravois Arm Sewer District in Morgan County with a $1 million 40 percent construction grant and an $84,000 rural sewer grant. Forty Percent State Construction grants are for the construction of wastewater collection and treatment systems. Public entities that do not qualify for a loan for the total eligible project costs from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program are eligible for the grant funding that can cover up to 40 percent of the eligible costs of a project. During tough economic times, this infusion of grant funding will help the district protect its citizens and the environment by making necessary wastewater improvements.
The district will use the grants to pay for the construction of a countercurrent extended air wastewater treatment plant and collection system including force mains, lift stations, grinder pumps and other necessary equipment. The district will use the grant in conjunction with money from the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Grant and Loan program and the city of Gravois Mills. The project is estimated to cost $4.1 million and is expected to be completed in December 2009.
The Department sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007. The sale of the bonds allows the Department to provide the district with the grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements.
The Department of Natural Resources' Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds. The Department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
