JEFFERSON CITY, MO, -- Gov. Jay Nixon announced the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded the Howell-Oregon Public Water Supply District No. 2 with a $179,000 grant. During tough economic times, this infusion of grant funding will help the district protect its citizens and the environment by making necessary drinking water improvements.
The district will use the grant to fund approximately 24 percent of the cost to construct a 200,000-gallon elevated storage tank. The project is estimated to cost $733,100 and is expected to be completed in September 2009.
The Department sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007. The sale of the bonds allows the Department to provide the district with grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements. The district will use the grant in conjunction with matching funds from a loan provided through USDA Rural Development and funds from the water district.
The Department of Natural Resources' Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds. The Department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
