JEFFERSON CITY, MO, -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has approved the Hematite Radioactive Site Record of Decision for Operable Unit 1 in Jefferson County.  The remedy focuses on the safe cleanup, treatment and off-site disposal of impacted buried waste, construction debris, soils and sediment located on the property.  The Record of Decision was prepared by Westinghouse Electric Company LLC (Westinghouse), which is the current owner of the site.

Among the various contaminant source areas at the site, there are 40 documented burial pits with contaminants of concern including uranium and solvents.  The site also includes two evaporation ponds, a site pond with impacted sediment, numerous large buildings and underlying soils.

To clean up the site, impacted soils and materials will be excavated, characterized and segregated for treatment.  Solvent impacted soils and materials will be treated on-site.  All radiological impacted soils and material will be sent for disposal at a licensed out-of-state disposal facility. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will conduct oversight activities throughout the cleanup process and is confident that this Record of Decision is protective of human health and the environment.

Westinghouse acquired this 228 acre site in 2000.  The facility has been in operation under various owners since 1956 and historically operated as a nuclear fuel manufacturing facility.  Westinghouse is in the process of decommissioning the facility under the oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  This process will simultaneously address cleanup and management of the radiologically contaminated soil, sediment, and debris to allow future residential use of the property.

Westinghouse and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting in the near future to discuss the Record of Decision, anticipated time frames and field activities.

The Record of Decision is available on the Department's website at www.dnr.mo.gov/env/hwp/fedfac/hematite.htm.
