JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JAN. 5, 2010 - Gov. Jay Nixon announced the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded Platte County Public Water Supply District No. 8 a $444,470 Rural Water grant. This infusion of grant funding will help the district protect its citizens and the environment by making necessary drinking water improvements.

The district will use the grant to fund approximately 50 percent of the cost of constructing another supply point from the city of Smithville, a new 100,000 gallon elevated storage tank and construction of approximately 25,800 feet of distribution mains. The department also issued a $444,800 drinking water direct loan to the district in October. The project is estimated to cost $989,270 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010.

The department sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007. The sale of the bonds allows the department to provide the district with grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements.

The Department of Natural Resources' Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds. The department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
