JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MAY 19, 2010--The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will host a public hearing June 15 in LaGrange on the draft solid waste disposal area construction permit for a horizontal expansion to the Backridge Sanitary Landfill in Lewis County.
The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the LaGrange City Hall, 118 South Main St.
The Backridge Sanitary Landfill is owned by BFI Waste Systems of Missouri and used for disposal of municipal solid waste, non-hazardous household, commercial, agricultural, governmental, industrial, construction and demolition wastes.
The landfill is located about 1.7 miles south of LaGrange, at the northeast corner of the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and State Route B. The landfill currently has a disposal area of 30 acres on a 70-acre site. The proposed construction permit would allow the disposal area to be increased to 34 acres, adding an additional seven years of operating life to the landfill.
The department’s Solid Waste Management Program reviews all applications submitted by cities, counties and private owners to ensure solid waste disposal areas are properly designed and constructed. Other technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment also are examined.
Citizens can review a copy of the draft solid waste disposal area construction permit at the LaGrange Public Library, 114 South Main, or upon request at the department’s Solid Waste Management Program Record Center, 1730 East Elm St., in Jefferson City.
