JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 16, 2010 –The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded the village of Bethel in Shelby County a $106,400 rural sewer grant and a $28,670 small borrower loan to construct wastewater system improvements.

The wastewater system improvement project will convert the existing treatment wetlands to a secondary storage cell and will provide for the construction of a land application system with pumps, valve pit, controls and other upgrades to make a complete and usable system. The interest rate on the loan will be approximately 2 percent, which is substantially below current market conditions. The project is estimated to cost $288,307 and is expected to be completed in May 2011. The village will provide matching funds to pay for the project.

The department sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007. The sale of the bonds allows the department to provide Bethel with the grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements. The Department of Natural Resources’ Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds.

The department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
