JEFFERSON CITY, MO NOV. 2, 2010 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded the city of Wellsville with a $500,000 Rural Water Grant to improve its distribution system and connect the community to a more reliable source of drinking water.
The city will use the grant as part of a funding package to replace its drinking water distribution system and connect to the Clarence Cannon Wholesale Water Commission in Stoutsville. The funds will be used in conjunction with a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Program and a grant from the Department of Economic Development Community Development Block Grant Program. The project is estimated to cost $1.73 million and is expected to be completed in August of 2011.
The department sold $50 million in bonds in November 2007. The sale of the bonds allows the department to provide the city with grant funds to support the Clean Water Initiative for water and wastewater improvements.
The Department of Natural Resources’ Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds and is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings.
