The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting on Sunday, April 14 at Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site in Kansas City. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the home.
Site staff will be on hand to discuss recent changes at the Benton Home, plans for future projects, and a brief overview of Missouri State Parks. Light refreshments will be served. Guided tours of the home and studio will be available before and after the meeting.
After the meeting, there will be an unveiling of a recently acquired silk tablecloth, on which 22 year-old Tom Benton painted an abstract design as a gift for his mother while he was living with his parents in Neosho, Mo. This tablecloth is very rare and unusual, as very few of Benton’s early works survived the fire that destroyed his boyhood home in 1917. The Benton Home used its Donations Fund to purchase the circa-1911 tablecloth from the New Britain (CT) Museum of American Art.
The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by the department to ensure the public has input on state parks and historic sites.
Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site is located at 3616 Belleview in Kansas City.
