The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Columbia Public Schools are holding an open house on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 6-8:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the Neil C. Aslin District Administration Building, 1818 W. Worley St., Columbia, Mo. The purpose of the event is to solicit ideas from the public on development of a Nature School in the district.

The open house will feature a multi-station set-up, and include a children’s area, where kids of all ages can offer their own ideas or participate in nature-related activities. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear a brief overview and timetable for the project, and they’ll be asked to share their ideas in several categories, including building design and materials, park-related activities for students and potential partnerships.

Preliminary plans for the school include a location on the Rock Bridge Memorial State Park property, staffed by school district employees beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. Fifth-grade students would be selected through a lottery process for enrollment.

The open house is an opportunity for individuals living in the district and interested members of the public to share their ideas and offer input on the project. Participants are welcomed to attend the open house for the entire 2 1/2 hour session or to stop in for a shorter period of time throughout the evening.
