Volume 41-172 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 23, 2013
Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri State Museum will present the program, “Early Hotels of Jefferson City,” as part of its ongoing “Museum after Hours” series on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the program will be held at 7 p.m. in the museum classroom, which is located in the History Hall in the east wing of the State Capitol.
Visitors will be able to join museum staff member Henry Gensky for a brief history of some of Jefferson City’s early hotels. The program will include discussion of the McCarty House, a favorite of many visitors to the capital city, including Senator Thomas Hart Benton. The historic hotel’s guest list also included Frank James, brother to Jesse James, who was at the McCarty House the night before his surrender to Governor Crittendon in 1882.
The Missouri State Museum’s “Museum after Hours” events are held the first Wednesday of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. “Museum after Hours” is for those who have wondered what it would be like to visit the museum at night or for anyone whose schedule doesn’t allow daytime outings. In addition to the special programs, the event allows a more relaxed time to view the museum exhibits. These exhibits include both old favorites and new offerings, including “Civil War Missouri: A House Dividing,” which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and includes a rotating artifact collection that changes every 6 months. Evening entry to the museum will be through the carriage entrance on the south side of the building underneath the grand staircase.
The Missouri State Museum, which is part of the Missouri state park system, is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol. For more information, contact the museum at 573-751-2854.
