JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 15, 2004 - Six additional Missouri trail projects will receive funding, thanks to a second awarding of grants through the federal Recreational Trails Program.
The Recreational Trails Program is a federal grant program for trail-related land acquisition, development or restoration funded through the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). In Missouri, Recreational Trails Program funds are administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration. Fourteen projects received grants in September for fiscal year 2004 and now six additional projects will receive funding for more than $375,000.
"These additional funds will allow even more communities and citizens to enjoy healthy, outdoor recreation opportunities," said Steve Mahfood, Department of Natural Resources director.
The six grant recipients were chosen from the initial 64 applications and were selected based on recommendations from the Missouri Trails Advisory Board, which represents diverse trail interest groups. The grants were awarded based on the results of a competitive scoring process and the application's suitability under funding provisions included in TEA - 21 and other federal guidelines. At least a 20 percent match is required by the applicant. A funding requirement targets 30 percent of the funding for motorized trails, 30 percent for non-motorized trails and 40 percent for diversified trail use.
Following is a list of Recreational Trails Program grant recipients, along with the projects and grant amounts:
- Trailnet, Inc., Riverfront Trail renovations, St. Louis County, $76,230
- Missouri Department of Conservation, Clinton Office Site Wetland Trail, Henry County, $5,000
