JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 6, 2005 - A project to control erosion along Forest Lake is under way at Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced today. The goal of the project is to control erosion and stabilize the shoreline of the lake, which is used as water supply for the city of Kirksville.

The project will protect the recreational resources and facilities along the shoreline in Thousand Hills State Park. In addition, the department is working with the city of Kirksville to ensure protection of its water supply. Approximately 10,000 tons of rock will be applied to the shoreline of Forest Lake to protect the water by reducing sedimentation, which increases the cost of producing potable water and decreases the life span of the lake. The project will cost approximately $171,000 and is being funded by the one-tenth-of-one-percent parks-and-soils sales tax, which was approved by Missouri voters.

The park will remain open during the project, however, there will be additional large trucks on park roads and heavy equipment will be in operation Monday through Thursday. During the construction, shelter #2 will not be available to rent. The project is expected to be complete by Dec. 1.
