CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY NOV. 11 AT

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 27, 2005 -- Honor veterans at the Veterans Day Observance to be held Friday, Nov. 11, at Battle of Athens State Historic Site near Revere. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a memorial service at the Athens cemetery beginning at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The memorial service will include Civil War re-enactors and representatives from the Clark County American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Daughters of Union Veterans. Following the service, the Thome-Benning house will be open and feature displays honoring national, state and local veterans. At 1 p.m., a flag disposal ceremony will be conducted by the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and students from Running Fox Elementary School in Alexandria. Visitors are invited to attend and bring any worn out state and national flags for proper disposal. Refreshments will be served.
Battle of Athens State Historic Site interprets the northernmost Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, which was fought on Aug. 5, 1861. The site is located off Highway 81 on Highway CC in Clark County.
