JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 17, 2005 -- Enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of Christmas' past this holiday season in Missouri state historic sites. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, these events range from Christmas concerts to open houses serving Christmas treats with a foreign flavor.
- Nov. 26 -- Hanging of the Greens, Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock 660-837-3330. Join the Christmas caroling at 1 p.m. as the evergreen boughs are hung along the boardwalk, followed by a visit from Santa Claus.
- Nov. 26 -- Dec. 31 -- Yesteryear Christmas Exhibit, Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock 660-837-3330. Christmas ornaments that children of yesteryear would have made with ribbon, paper, thread and fabric will be on exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the site's visitor center.
- Dec. 3-4 -- Christmas Open House and Weihnachtsfest, Deutschheim State Historic Site, Hermann 573-486-2200. View seven different styles of 19th century Christmas trees decorated in traditional German fashion. German cookie samples and refreshments will be served. The event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
- Dec. 3 -- Christmas on the Farm, Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site, Lawson 816-580-3387. The historic site will host an 1870s Christmas celebration from noon until 8 p.m. at the decorated Watkins home. Activities of the day include parlor games, caroling, seasonal refreshments, a visit from Father Christmas and lamplight tours of the home.
- Dec. 4 -- Winter Concert -- Confederate Memorial State Historic Site, Higginsville 660-584-2853. A Christmas concert will be held at 2 p.m. in the site's seasonally decorated chapel.
- Dec. 9-10 -- Christmas Candlelight Tours, Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site, New Madrid 573-748-5340. Enjoy an 1860 Victorian Christmas during candlelight tours of the Hunter-Dawson home, which will be decorated with hundreds of feet of pine roping, three Christmas trees, ribbons and trimming. Staff in period costumes will give tours between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
- Dec. 10-11 -- Christmas Open House and Weihnachtsfest, Deutschheim State Historic Site, Hermann 573-486-2200. View seven different styles of 19th century Christmas trees decorated in traditional German fashion. German cookie samples and refreshments will be served. The event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
- Dec. 10 -- Immigrant Christmas, Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, Lexington 660-259-4654. The Friends of the Anderson House will portray four ethnic groups who settled early Lexington. They will relay their traditions and decorations and serve typical Christmas goodies. The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a fee will be charged.
- Dec. 10 -- Christmas Open House, Battle of Athens State Historic Site, Athens 660-877-3871. The Thome-Benning House will be the center of 19th century Christmas festivities featuring period musicians, decorations, holiday refreshments and desserts. Re-enactors, costumed in Civil War-era dress, will welcome visitors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Dec. 11 -- French Christmas Open House, Felix Vallé House State Historic Site, Ste. Genevieve 573-883-7102. This annual celebration highlights the music, food, customs and decorations of an early French Christmas celebration known as Le Revellion. Costumed guides will explain the early 1800s customs and the dining room will be filled with traditional foods of the period, including the buche de Noel (Yule log cake). Admission is free to this event, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
