JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JAN. 19, 2006 –The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will allow Renewable Environmental Solutions Inc. (RES) to temporarily restart its facility to remove poultry waste that was being processed into oil when the Carthage facility was ordered to shut down Dec. 29.
“We are working with RES to allow the facility to process the materials remaining in the tanks and pipes when the plant was shut down three weeks ago,” said Department of Natural Resources Director Doyle Childers. “If they simply pump out the tanks and pipes instead of processing the material, the smell would be much worse. Temporarily allowing RES to process the poultry waste will prevent the material from degrading and becoming septic and will reduce the risk of a health hazard.”
RES cannot add new material during the processing of the remaining waste. Since the plant was shut down, RES has completed the installation of new odor control technology. RES’s new odor control systems must be in operation throughout the process of cleaning out the system.
Following Gov. Matt Blunt's directive, the department ordered Renewable Environmental Solutions Inc. to stop all odorous emissions from its operations and suspended the facility's air permit for 60 days. A copy of the order issued last month is available at www.dnr.mo.gov/resorder.pdf. The department also referred the six previous Notices of Violations to the Attorney General's Office. For news releases on the Web, visit www.dnr.mo.gov/newsrel.
