JEFFERSON CITY, MO, FEB. 15, 2006 – On Jan. 30, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources upgraded an odor violation issued late last year to Schreiber Foods, Inc., 127 Claxton Ave., Carthage.

On Dec 30 staff from the department’s Southwest Regional Office conducted an odor investigation of Schreiber Foods, and the department later issued a Notice of Excess Emissions to Schreiber. The facility had 15 days to respond to the department to explain the reason for the excess odor emission. Schreiber’s explanation did not meet the regulatory requirements for designation as a startup, shutdown or malfunction, so the department upgraded the Notice of Excess Emission to a Notice of Violation Jan. 30. The department previously documented odor problems twice in 2005 at the Schreiber facility.

The department will work with Schreiber to ensure compliance with state regulations. The department’s main goal in any enforcement action is to help the facility successfully achieve compliance with the standards and then maintain compliance.
