JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JULY 27, 2006 -- Improved services to park visitors and closer environmental assistance to area communities will be celebrated Aug. 5 as the Missouri Department of Natural Resources holds a grand opening and ribbon cutting for its new facilities at Harry S Truman State Park near Warsaw. The grand opening will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the park's new contact station, 28761 State Park Road.
Door prizes will be given away to the public during the grand opening. These will include free camping coupons for use in any Missouri state park campground and a gift certificate for a free full-day pontoon rental provided by the Truman State Park Marina. Free drinks, hot dogs and other refreshments will be available from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Department Director Doyle Childers along with local and county officials from Benton, Henry and Pettis counties, will visit with the public attending the event.
The new building replaces the facility lost in a lightning-caused fire in 2001. The contact station contains office space for law enforcement and administrative staff that oversee Harry S Truman State Park. Communities and businesses in Benton, Pettis and Henry counties will also find environmental assistance much closer, as the department's Field Services Division opens its new Truman Lake Satellite Office at the site. An environmental specialist housed at the park's office will provide environmental assistance and facility inspections to local communities and facilities. The satellite office will extend and enhance the environmental services provided to the region by the department's Kansas City Regional Office.
The new contact station provides a convenient and efficient area for staff to work and meet the public. The building was designed to blend well with the natural landscape and have minimal impact on the environment. Increased insulation and a ground source heat pump providing heating and cooling make the station very energy efficient. The building also provides space for interpretive exhibits about Harry S Truman and the lake area, and opportunities for public education and interpretation. Construction of the building was financed primarily by the one-tenth-of-one percent parks-and-soils sales tax, which was approved by Missouri voters.
Department Director Doyle Childers is looking forward to visiting with guests at the grand opening. "One of my greatest goals for the department is to serve communities and facilities more directly by placing more staff in the field," said Childers. "Establishing Truman State Park as a local base for field services staff helps us get environmental help closer to where it is needed." The Truman Lake Satellite Office is the fourth satellite office opened by the department in the last year, following offices opened in Maryville, Rolla and Portageville.
