JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 13, 2006 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources invites the public to view the 1st Missouri State Militia flag for the first time since it has undergone conservation. The Civil War flag is on display in the Missouri State Museum's History Hall on the first floor of the State Capitol through Jan. 15.

The conservation and exhibition of the flag is the result of a long-term project to conserve the flags in the Missouri State Museum's collection. The 1st Missouri State Militia flag is the most recent flag to undergo conservation. As additional flags are conserved, they will be exhibited on a rotating basis. The Department of Natural Resources plans to have at least one Civil War flag on display in the Missouri State Museum until the Civil War sesquicentennial commemoration is completed in 2016.

The 1st Missouri State Militia was organized in St. Louis in May of 1862. It served provost and prison guard duty until September of 1862. It was then assigned to provide protection to vital rail lines in the southeast part of the state. Companies of the 1st Missouri State Militia helped defend Fort Davidson during the Battle of Pilot Knob in September of 1864.

To date, 34 flags have been conserved and 12 have been framed for exhibition. The Civil War flags will be a central part of the Missouri's State Museum's interpretation of the Civil War as it moves toward the commemoration of the conflict that divided the state just as it did the nation.

The museum is open to the public free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
