JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 13, 2006 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public session to explain the landfill permitting process for an expansion request from Prairie Valley Landfill in Crawford County.

Prairie Valley Landfill, located three miles north of I-44 at Cuba on Hwy 19, has obtained preliminary site investigation approval to begin design for the construction of a second expansion of the sanitary landfill. The facility is requesting to expand the landfill to 420 acres.

Representatives from the department's Solid Waste Management Program, Division of Geology and Land Survey and Southeast Regional Office will be available to answer questions from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Crawford County R-II Middle School Cafeteria, #1 Wildcat Pride Drive, Cuba. This public session will be the first of several meetings held to encourage public participation through the permitting process.

The Department of Natural Resources reviews all applications submitted by cities, counties and private owners to ensure that solid waste landfills are properly designed and constructed. The department also examines other technical factors that protect Missouri's environment.
