JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 20, 2006 -- A commemorative walk on a section of the Trail of Tears will be held on Dec. 2 at Trail of Tears State Park near Jackson. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Memorial Trail Walk will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Join park staff for a candlelight vigil and silent moment of reflection along a portion of the Trail of Tears, a trail taken by Cherokee Indians in their forced march to the West. The one-mile round-trip walk will go from the park's Wescoat Shelter to the Bushyhead Memorial along Moccasin Springs Road. Participants should meet at the shelter at 4 p.m. and dress appropriately for the weather and to walk.

Trail of Tears State Park is located on the site where nine of 13 groups of Cherokee Indians crossed the Mississippi River in harsh winter conditions in 1838-39. The Bushyhead Memorial is a tribute to all that lost their lives on the trail during the forced relocation.

To reach Trail of Tears State Park, go 10 miles east of Fruitland, off Highway 61 on Highway 177 in Cape Girardeau County.
