JEFFERSON CITY, MO, DEC 8, 2006 --- Stuart Westmoreland, editor of the department's Missouri Resources magazine and manager of its publications office, has been named Missouri Department of Natural Resources' December 2006 Employee of the Month.

Westmoreland is being honored for working extensively with the U.S. Postal Service to establish non-profit status for Missouri Resources (MR). Under the non-profit mailing rate, the department will save $13,000 annually from the cost of mailing the magazine to its nearly 70,000 readers. The magazine is free to Missouri residents, and out-of-state residents can subscribe for $4.50 per year or $8 for two years.

As manager of the publications office, Westmoreland oversees not only the production of the department's magazine, but also assists with the contract specifications, creates the production schedule and chairs MR's editorial board. Since assuming these duties several years ago, Westmoreland has saved the department thousands of dollars in late fees and other costs by consistently meeting publication deadlines and other contractual obligations.

In Fiscal Years 2004 and 2005, Westmoreland's staff produced more than 500 departmental publications, including posters, brochures, directories, booklets and reports. As public demand for high quality environmental information about Missouri increases, this workload can be expected to grow.

"Stuart's pursuit of non-profit status for the magazine is just one example of his many efforts to spread the department's message in ways that are both efficient and cost-effective," said Kathy Deters, public information coordinator with the director's office. In nominating Westmoreland for December Employee of the Month, Deters said, "When designing and ordering new publications for the department, Stuart always researches the most affordable way to create these documents. He and his staff also have been designing public service announcements that provide environmental tips to a large audience through advertisements published in Missouri's newspapers."

Westmoreland lives near Jefferson City and he has worked for the department for 16 years.
